I hate the whole Porting debate...

Reading through the Sony Playstation blog (Is the Playstation harder to develop for?) and I decided to browse a few comments because I love fanboy rants...

Apart from the usual comments, including one lovely block there where one guy goes on and on and gets every second word wrong (seriously!), we come to this same argument which seems to me a bit weird - "It's easier to port from the PS3 to the Xbox than it is to go from the Xbox to the PS3" (quoting the idea, not any one person).

I just really must be a bit thick because I don't get that.

Wouldn't the changes between two games be exactly the same either way?  The game is programmed one way on the PS3 and another on the Xbox, the code differences should pretty much be the same either way.

And they admit that it's more difficult to code for the PS3 (because the undoubtable awesomeness of the extra processing power - which every other article I've read has mentioned that the PS3 is only more powerful in specific circumstances and it's really a wash overall).

So, if you're pretty much got the same changes no matter which way you do it... and it's easier to program on the Xbox... then wouldn't the porting just seem to be easier?

Xbox (Easier)
->
PS3 (Harder)
Man this is so much harder!

I may be simplifying it there, but it seems to be the argument they're trying to make and all in all it just sounds like they're trying to convince developers that if they want to build a multiplatform game to start on the PS3 - and if you don't quite get to the Xbox, well, that's okay too.

 Of course, as a fanboy I myself have no history programming either, I just like watching the debate, so if anyone wants to tell me I'm wrong then feel free :)
