Getting over Music Snobbery

written by Andrew Tobin on Friday, April 13 2007

So I've been thinking about doing some compilations for my nephew and niece sometime.  I always think about all the songs in the past that I liked, but I've found my tastes have changed greatly over the years.

Where in the past I was strictly inside the Tool, Faith No More, Metallica, Megadeth, Ozzy Osbourne, Pantera, etc, etc, etc world... well lets just say my current trends have gone much more folksy... I've been a huge fan of Elliott Smith for around the last 6 or so years.

And that's just one guy out of the list.

But to go back and make a list of my favorite bands... hell, I can barely remember them.

And my favorite bands from the past change greatly over time...

Luckily I spent my entire fortune collecting tonnes of cds, so stuff like Stiltskin, Cordrazine, Joseph Arthur, whoever.. I already have... so no needing to look for anything too obscure I hope.  If you can call someone like that obscure.

So basically it comes down to remembering what is out there.

Well I just noticed that Wikipedia actually lists bands by year.

So I'll probably have to go looking through them.  Not that I actually think that any wikipedia article could be remotely accurate or complete - so if someone can look into updating all those, please go for it.

And if anyone has any good suggestions for music to collect - holler.

I've just gotten Guitar Hero II for the Xbox 360 and that has some very catchy tunes that I haven't ever heard - one that I'm finding catchy is Possum Kingdom by The Toadies.

I guess that's kind of a good thing for a game where you repeatedly hear the same tunes over and over.

Anyway, so that's kind of the thinking behind this - the fact there are great tunes, even from the 90s that I just passed over in my din of heavy metal, sitting in my room listening to the Gunners and Nirvana.

Anyone know of any other sites, lists, or places to troll for terrific music?

Yeah, try http://www.last.fm/user/noroseability/. That page has the best music, but after that page you could go to the main page, and make use of their mad search and comparisons and stuff. It's the most accurate I've seen so far in predicting what CDs I don't have ripped to my computer...)

Ah, you don't know t's mission in life is to convert everyone to his taste of music one song at a time. Whatever you do, if you invite him over for tea lock up your pc. He'll rearrange your music on you.

Dude, I followed his last.fm through to yours...

In your top 20 are: Neil Diamond, Kenny Rogers, Herman's Hermits, the Bee Gees, Buddy Holly, Elton John, Il Divo, Robbie Williams... and most seriously of all - Foster and Allen.

In your recently listened list there was S Club 7.

    I think he's doing you a favour :)

Got to remember though that I have kids. Plus I'm a child of parents of the sixties. That's got to have some influence.

Anyway, I generally like songs, couldn't care less who sings them.

Our folks aren't that far apart in ages then dude, but my folks lent more towards being Beatle maniacs, and that damn Tijuana Brass guy.

And I know you got kids, but I hope they're not big Foster and Allen fans!

I always wondered who bought those albums.

But yeah after just glancing at Tristan's list for the week and finding Britney Spears rates 7th...

    Y'all are nuts.

Yeah I like Beatles too. Foster and Allen is in there for my traditional Irish music. Wild Rover would be one of my all time favourites. Couldn't care less who sang it. It's the Celtic blood. Plus my little girl is showing signs of actually having some co-ordination and seems to be a natural at Irish Dancing. That stuff will help her.

Do you know you're 'Remember Me' switch is not remembering me. I know cookies are turned on.
